Portáš bandits and another bandits

Portáš bandits – the safety brigade, they protected the cols, borders, later the coutry and the safe near the border. They also caught the recruits, accompanied the army division, they followed the tobacco and salt pushers.

The Portáš brigade arised in 1638 and since 1717 there was by the ceasar approved the „Brigade of Portáš“ and the head was the guardian (the captain before). To the guardian there were conformed also some corporals and some Portáš bandits. One of the most famous Portáš bandits was Stavinoha from Velké Karlovice.

Portáš bandits wore the wallachian costume and they were equiped with the baton (at the end of the baton there was a dagger), the rope with the bowl at the end and later they had the short cutlass. They wore also the knitted bag for some bread and the bottle for some water. Their service took several days, they slept in the mansions. There was a place for the rest in every valley (for example through the valley Podťaté in Velké Karlovice they were called Noclehy). The brigade was definitely broken in 1830 up and to the activity recover came in 2005 in Valašská Bystřice.

The main aim of the civil association of the Portáš bandits today is to mention the famous history of Portáš in Moravia. The members of the association walk through the mountains and they wear the wallachian costume. There they meet with the local people and tourists and they give some information about the history of the Portáš bandits. They cooperate with the Protected natural area Beskydy, they protect the countryside and the landscape and they are the informators. They wear the gun, therefore they must have the necessary practice.

They stood against the bandits whose were the mountains with the deep woods the votive country for. In Velké Karlovice there was the most famous the bandit Paseka who had the cottage in Jezerné. In the legends there is talked about the seven brothers Mateřánkovi.

One of the most famous bandit was also Ondráš, Fuciman from Janovice´s son. He was also called „The master of the Lysá mountain“. His father was captured in the castle Hukvaldy. Ondráš helped him to escape. Ondráš also escaped, joined to another farmers and he became their leader.

 

 

 

 

His life was ended on 1 April 1715 in the pub of Horák. The bandits danced and laughed there when Jura killed Ondráš because of his success by the publican´s daughter. All the bandits were captured and judged in Těšín. Juráš was also caught and he died in the prison two years after Ondráš´s death.
